DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY
The La Paz Medical Center in Malabo has become a pioneer in the field of national ophthalmology by performing, for the first time in the country, cataract surgeries using phacoemulsification with a minimal incision and implantation of a premium quality preloaded intraocular lens inserted through a wound of only 2.2 mm, without the need for sutures. For these procedures, we use phacoemulsification equipment with innovative technology and a microscope with the latest technology in high-definition three-dimensional visualization on a 3D screen through integrated digital optics.
The first surgery was performed on an 87-year-old male patient with a "hard" senile cataract, and the second on a 48-year-old male patient with an intumescent cataract. On the first postoperative day, both patients presented with a clear cornea and minimal inflammatory reaction, with immediate and significant recovery of vision and independence from the outset, thus improving their quality of life. Our state-of-the-art phacoemulsification equipment allows for the removal of all types of cataracts with minimal trauma to ocular tissues and in less time. The surgery is performed through such a small incision that stitches are not required, offering the patient almost immediate visual recovery, no postoperative pain, a lower risk of infection, and a quick return to their normal activities and work.
The visualization quality of the new ophthalmic surgical microscope is the most revolutionary in digital optics, allowing the surgeon to see the details of the eye's tiny structures with exceptional clarity, guaranteeing greater surgical precision. But one of the most important advantages is the safety and comfort for the patient by reducing phototoxicity and glare.
For the first time in Equatorial Guinea, patients have access to surgical standards comparable to the best international ophthalmological centers. La Paz Medical Center is a pioneering and visionary institution, incorporating state-of-the-art equipment for cataract surgery and many other eye procedures, marking a turning point in ophthalmology in the country.
